Marie A. Holmes
Marie A. Holmes, 86, formerly of Scranton, died peacefully Monday at Abington Manor in Clarks Summit.  Born on March 20, 1931 in Dunmore, she was the daughter of Leo P. and Marie V. (Barrett) Holmes. A two-time survivor of breast cancer, she was a loving daughter, aunt, cousin and friend who cared deeply for her family and maintained life-long friendships. She was a devout Catholic and a member for many years of St. Paul’s Parish in Green Ridge. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, and spent her entire career with the PP&L before her retirement. Marie postponed her own college education in order to support her widowed mother and allow her younger brother Jerry to complete his education and support his wife and family. Through perseverance and love of learning, she attended night school while working and earned her bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Scranton at the age of 43. A lifelong resident of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Marie was an avid golfer at several favorite local courses including Homestead, Panorama and Lakeland. She also enjoyed Scranton’s cultural scene, especially concerts and theater at the Masonic Temple. She was an animal lover and could always be depended upon to care for family pets as well as her own. Above all, Marie loved spending time with her family and friends. Marie was also preceded in death by her brother, Gerard P. Holmes and his wife, Ann Werner Holmes.  She is survived by six nieces and nephews (who knew her as “Mea”), Karen A. Holmes, Forest Hill, Md.; Nancy Holmes, Mountaintop, Pa.; Todd G. Holmes (Cathy), Bethlehem, Pa.; Timothy F. Holmes (Susan Quillio), Greenwich, N.Y.; Susan H. Hunter (Jeffrey), Clarks Summit, Pa.; and Patrick S. Holmes (Missy), Avoca, Pa.; and by three great-nieces and two great-nephews. The family extends their thanks to the staffs of Abington Manor and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kindness and care of our dear aunt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton.
